Can-A-Thon - The Homestead Weekly Update
Good day everyone we hope you had a wonderful week and enjoyed a long weekend for Labor Day. We visited R’s parents this past weekend in a long over due visit. They are doing well and we have a great time seeing them. It’s been a Canningthon this week, so many peaches, but the good news is we are done and all we need now is apples for apple sauce and (cider maybe yummmm) and R needs to talk M about maybe canning some pumpkins. Might strike a deal with her and make some pumpkin roll on a weekly rotation to sweeten the pot.
Canning
So we did some canning, so much actually we ran out of jars twice. We have enough peaches now to have them at least one meal per week not counting the salsas, pie fillings, syrup and jam. We have half gallons, quarts and pints full of peaches and nectarines. Oh and they are so good, the kids were thrilled by the amount of fruit they could eat while doing all this open buffet for them. We learned a ton and hopefully next year we can do it smoother and in half the time. We definitely are going to invest in another pot.
Other activities around the homestead
So canning really took up the brunt of the week. We did have a lot of scraps we gave to the chickens but we also had a lot that needed to head to the compost pile. So R spent a day sifting the black gold from the bottom and making more room. We were definitely pleased with the amount of good compost we had and being able to mix it with the rabbit manure our plants will be thrilled this fall and next week. That being said, it’s a lot of work so if you have any tips please let us know.
We also decided to bag up some of the rabbit manure and sell it, although we aren’t expecting much since it’s late in the seasons it’s still worth a try.
J’s desk is completed and installed, he’s quite thrilled with the additional space it brings him, his only complaint was he need to sit on his knees to write good. I guess that’s a good thing, something he can grow into. Next up and currently working on is a shelf to hold his laptop and other items right above the desk. Should be done be end of day tomorrow actually.
Well that’s about it for this week, we are busy gearing up for a huge consignment sale starting next week so M has been busy getting all the clothes and items ready and R is going to become the tag master after the kids go to bed tonight and tomorrow. We hope you have a wonderful weekend. God bless you all and thank you for sharing in our journey. We’re praying for you all!
