Walking the Plank - The Homestead Weekly Update

Good day everyone! We hope you have had a wonderful week. The weather yesterday was amazing and today isn’t looking any different! This week has been a odd one. Have you ever had one of those days or even weeks where you know you have put in a lot of work and time but at the end of the day you really have nothing to show for it? It’s been that way here this week. So let’s jump right in cause I have no idea where this may lead.

Birdhouse kits

R spent a evening re-sawing some small logs for the birdhouse kits and now are drying out the rest of the way. This batch here is all oak and we have enough for at least 5 kits maybe more. The spalting in the oak looks awesome. This was only 4 small logs worth of wood as well with plenty more to complete.

If you’re interested in ordering a birdhouse kit please message us. We are working on putting a shop up in the website once some are built as well.

Jaidyn Bedroom

This project is finally complete. The final shelf was put up Wednesday night and we can finally call this a wrap. He’s very excited with his desk area, bed and places to put all his toys and books. Now R only needs to make 2 more set ups like this for the twins.

Small Walnut logs

We had a lot of larger branches from the walnut tree we cut down. Instead of throwing this into the burn pile, we decided to harvest the heart wood for wood turning blanks. From the stash we have minimum we could have 60 blanks, I’m being overly conservative in my estimate it will be closer to 100. R also got to test out a new tool, the Froe. This tool works amazing at splitting green wood. It’s truly amazing learning how things were made over 100 years ago and the process about doing so. It gives you much more appreciation to the work they accomplished back then.

Large Walnut Logs

We started milling up these logs the past 2 days putting the chainsaw mill to work. We are getting some nice walnut slabs and having some fun while doing it. Here’s a quick 1 min video from one of them.

So far we cut up about 80 board feet of walnut and haven’t even dented the pile. I’m really not sure whose more exited R because he loves woodworking or M cause she’s thinking of all the new furniture R could build. We’re hoping to get a log done a day. Hopefully by the end of next week we will have a nice huge pile to start air drying.

Well that about wraps up this week. M got great news from the doctor about the baby. She’s doing well and right where she needs to be and should be here God willing by the end of October. As I said before it doesn’t seem like we completed a lot but prepping is half the battle. God bless you all and we are praying for you. We hope you have a great weekend and a wonderful week!
