Getting Figgy with it - The Homestead Weekly Update
Hello everyone, we hope you have had a wonderful and eventful week. Have you ever had a day where the coffee just tastes, so much better then other days. Yes I’m having one of those days today. It’s been a good week on the homestead and fall is here. It’s definitely cooled off a lot and we need to start planning for winter and finishing up some of these projects before to much longer.
Tree plantings and Walnuts and Chestnut Harvesting.
So last Sunday afternoon we had a family afternoon catch up day. We had lots of things that need done so we broke up into groups and got to work. R & M main focus was to get our fig trees planted that have been sitting around since May, they are doing well in their new home. We have heavy clay and rocks here so we dig a hole about 3 times the size of the plant container and refil the hole with our freashly made compost and rabbit manure mixture. You can check out the short video of the finished product below.
J our oldest son had the filling in of all the dog holes and other rock holes I removed from the yard so we would break our ankles no more( ok we haven’t yet but it was getting bad out there started reminding me of roads in this great state of PA)
Then our twins Sil and Sim were tasked on opening up are wood trail pruning all the branches they could reach Sil did an amazing job he really took his job to heart and was so proud he could use the loppers.
Then A and m and r got the wagon and started picking up all the walnuts they could find on the ground. They did a great job for being 5 and under and after going through them all we have a good 30 or so walnuts to process.
We had a lot of rain Wednesday through Thursday and I’d though I’d test out saving water but putting a milk create with some in it under a down spout. It did ok but you will definitely need to scrub them afterwards.
Jai’s Bookshelf
So J’s bookshelf is nearing completion. I have to do a little touch up paint, and trim the shelves to size a hair or two to big at the moment. And add the walnut trim on the front and then that will be another much needed storage option for him. He also picked out a small walnut slab for the decorative shelf for above his computer and then I think I’ll be done for his room. The Twins have been begging me to do their room next. And the Girls too!
Consignment Week
M consignment items are almost half sold. She did extremely well so far. So little faith she has sometimes, but this was a huge success for her and it’s not over yet, still have today and tomorrow. She’s already planning on what she will be doing for spring. And if you are in the Carlisle area, today and tomorrow morning are 1/2 days so I’d check it out!
Well this pretty much wraps up this week in a nut shell. We have some chestnuts to roast, some debre to burn, some logs to slab by the fire, and a shelf to touch up paint, some hot dogs and marshmallows to roast. Then tomorrow we will have another family work afternoon putting up the duck pen. Hold us to that, please call us out if you don’t see an updated duck pen picture or video next week. Also please let us know what you are doing, we would love to hear your comments and ideas!
As always we are praying for you and thank you so much for coming on our journey! God Bless you all!
